Bill Honjas is President and CEO of Optim, Inc. (Optim), a Reno, Nevada-based corporation. Mr. Honjas holds a B.Sc. in Geology from Oregon State University and an M.Sc. in Geophysics from the University of Nevada, Reno. He began his career as a geologist with Exlog Smith Geothermal Division in 1982. Since then his career responsibilities have increased from being Project and Logistics Manager for the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) USA-USSR Nuclear Test Ban Verification Project during 1988 to being Director of Network Operations, Global Seismic Monitoring, at Scripps Institute in 1994. Mr. Honjas then accepted an offer to become Geophysical Division Director and Sr. Project Geophysicist for William Lettis & Associates (WLA), a prominent Bay Area geo-sciences consulting firm.
During July 1998 Mr. Honjas left WLA to co-found Optim with Dr. Satish Pullammanappallil. Optim’s founding technology is based on computational algorithms written and researched by Dr. Pullammanappallil and Mr. Honjas while they were graduate students at the University of Nevada. This technology was developed by Optim into the SeisOpt suite of seismic data processing software. SeisOpt products are now used by geotechnical and engineering companies to accurately, rapidly and economically reveal complex earth structure that could affect design and construction of structures and to measure ground shaking potential in the event of an earthquake. SeisOpt products are also used by the geothermal industry to increase drill success rates thereby reducing the risk and cost associated with geothermal development. Since founding Optim the company has grown to two offices in Reno and Las Vegas, Nevada and a world-wide community of users. Optim has also grown to include two wholly owned subsidiaries of which Mr. Honjas is President and CEO, those being Optim SDS and Klamath Basin Geopower.
Mr. Honjas is presently Visiting Research Faculty at the Nevada Seismological Laboratory. He is also on the Board of Advisors to the College of Science and Engineering at the University of Nevada. Mr. Honjas’ geophysical research has been widely published in a number of peer reviewed journals, including Geophysics, The Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America and the Geothermal Resources Council Bulletin. He has also been invited to present his research at a number of geophysical society meetings including the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union. Mr. Honjas’ experiences with the National Resource Defense Council Nuclear Test Ban Verification Project both at the Soviet and American nuclear test sites led to his being an invited guest speaker at the International Center for Strategic Studies at the University of California Los Angeles.
