Basement Mapping

Siemens and Associates of Bend, Oregon, wanted to use SeisOpt® @2D to map the basement and image the subsurface characteristic of a gneiss outcrop which was cut to construct a road. Geophones were placed in the gravel layer over the rock and there was hard rock directly beneath the seismic line. The first break picks were complicated and could bot be modeled by standard methods. The only data input used to produce the velocity model shown below were the first arrival travel-time data, and array geometry. No other a priori data were used.

SeisOpt® @2D images the gneiss body in the subsurface due to its ability to handle strong lateral variations in velocity. In fact, the petroleum industry uses our software for near-surface velocity static corrections because of the detail in which near-surface velocities are revealed.
